All 200 volunteer Community First Responders (CFR) across Northern Ireland are to undertake new on line training developed by Solutions in the next six months to keep themselves safe. The courses include conflict resolution and moving and handling of people. Community First Responders attend emergency calls before an ambulance to speed up response times so need this training. Offered on line it means CFR staff can complete at a time, place and pace to suit themselves.
The conflict resolution course will train staff in how to assess situations where a risk of being met by abusive, threatening or even violent behaviour will be learnt and how, if safe to do so to take control and resolve such situations. This will include viewing and assessing a number of filmed scenarios made for CFR staff. Solutions have a long track record of working with ambulance and community first responders in England to reduce these risks and the on line courses in Conflict Resolution have proven to be highly valuable.
The Moving and Handling course called “ Moving People” again accessed where and when it suits will train staff in all of the theory in looking after their backs as well as how to assess and communicate to people being moved, the principles of safer handling including how to work safely in a team. A key part of the course being that learners are given a number of filmed scenarios to assess and they suggest how to best deal with them. On completion of the theory the CFR’s will meet with a scheme organiser ( trained by Solutions) to learn how to apply the practical skills.
